28NameMagical depths - Ponds and dams
CountryCzechia
DirectorPavel Jirásek
ScriptPavel Jirásek
Duration26 min.Year2018
Are there clean water ponds and dams where plants, fish and other animal species can be easily observed? Yes! And this is a fabulous world inviting you to Lucie Výborná. Directed by P. Jirásek Artificial water reservoirs have, from time immemorial, shaped the character of the Czech and Moravian landscape. The ponds do not belong only to South Bohemia, but their cascades originated all over our territory, with the exception of mountain areas. At present, we have about one third of the ponds in comparison with the situation at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, yet they are extremely important works of water management. Pond, respectively. pond systems can hold water in the landscape more effectively than a dam. Small shaded water areas in hot weather better evaporation, the pond can also saturate the water and surrounding subsoil. From a diving point of view, it is quite difficult to investigate life beneath their surface, ponds used to breed cyprinids tend to be murky. An exception is the Big Bolevecký Pond near Pilsen, or some small ponds near sandstone rock towns with crystal tributaries. The observation of dam life is then dependent on the time of year, some of the reservoirs are cleaned in the spring and sometimes in the autumn due to natural processes - but this window is not longer than a few days. Normally diving requires a flashlight and strong nerves as visibility drops to one meter and almost no sunlight penetrates into the depths. Dam reservoirs, however necessary for today's civilization, pose an environmental burden: they destroy species diversity and store phosphorus and nitrogen-saturated mud that causes cyanobacterial overgrowth. However, visually, the world of dams and ponds is fascinating and one of the most beautiful in our nature.

The documentary should introduce the viewer to the theme of industrial landscapes, the principles of habitat functioning and to show how we can "cultivate" such a bitop if we follow the rules. Should human intervention in the landscape always be seen as its destruction? Does the restoration of landscape functionality, ie its reclamation, actually make sense when the landscape, or nature, can regenerate itself fairly? When does human aid land well, and when does it go wrong?

Duration60 min.Year2019

In six episodes, we explore the extreme depths and altitudes, the colder and hottest spots, wetlands and landscapes, and see how animals have adapted to survive in such hostile conditions. Often these will be really unusual methods. In addition, over the past 40 years, when the country has changed most in the past 65 million years, we have made it even more difficult for animals. In order not to die, the animals had to change their ways of survival in a single evolution. On the one hand, many species face inherently inhospitable natural and weather conditions, on the other hand, unsustainable danger from predators and intense struggle for livelihoods. Their choice is clear - to adapt, otherwise become extinct.
