5NameMt. Suswa - Life In A Volcano
CountryGermany
DirectorOliver Goetzl
ScriptOliver Goetzl
Duration51 min.Year2019
Volcanoes are temperamental, dangerous and deadly. Not the ideal place for wildlife. But Mt. Suswa in Kenya is a volcano like no other: it hosts a multitude of life both above and below its surface. Underground tunnels were formed thousands of years ago by rivers of lava whose outer layers cooled and solidified while the core continued to flow. Once the fluid lava evacuated itself completely, massive subterranean tubes were left behind. One of these caverns is the “Baboon Parliament” as the local Masai named it. Remarkably, Suswa is the only known place in the world where olive baboons roost in caves. It is an almost unique behaviour among primates that gives us a glimpse over the reasons that drove hominids to find shelter into caves in pre-historic times. Surprisingly so far no film has ever been made exclusively about this natural history wonder. Mt. Suswa’s rugged flanks conceal an untouched treasure trove of biodiversity hidden inside its craters and in the deep and mysterious scars left behind by its turbulent past. But the mountain's true colours are locked up within an aura of mystique: Mt. Suswa is a fortress protected by its own inaccessibility. Its bastions are steep, barren and sharp, discouraging any unwanted visitors. (Featured mammal species: olive baboon, rock hyrax, bat-eared fox, african wild dog, spotted hyena, kirk’s dik-dik, klipspringer, large-eared free-tailed bat, African elephant…).

The Avion Hotel in Brno is one of the narrowest in the world. Architect Bohuslav Fuchs had to imprint it into an 8-meter gap between the houses. He is admired by architectural experts from home and abroad, but they have a bleak picture in front of their photographs in catalogs. The last guests slept here seven years ago and since then Avion has been dilapidated. Owner Stanislav Berousek has a good will to repair it, but the state does not want to help him, even if it is a cultural monument.

It has survived a hundred and twenty years, but its future is not guaranteed. Magnificent works of art, woven from wool, cost a lot of money and fit into large representative halls. The tapestry workshop in Valašské Meziříčí is the oldest in the former Czechoslovakia and has survived both the economic crisis and changes in political regimes. In addition to restoration, it is one of the few in the world to specialize in converting modern paintings to tapestries. But finding a buyer and a place for such works of art is becoming increasingly difficult.

The large monastery of St. Gabriel on the slope of Prague's Petřín looks mysterious. It is hidden behind a high wall, its doors have been locked for several years, and only on Sunday before noon is the organ from the adjacent church. At the end of the 19th century it was built by German nuns, but they stayed there only for a short time. Much more time was spent here by post officials or stamp collectors. Now the monastery is worth 350 million crowns for sale.

Tedy nejrůznější kroje, písně, básně, obyčeje a tradice.

Popular youtuber and influencer Kovy embarks on a documentary roadmovie across the Czech education system to help find a solution to the problem of failing teaching of modern history. Research and statistics show that modern history in teaching history at our schools often ends in World War II. Even though some schools get at least at least 1989, they still often suffer from the general problem of Czech education, which is the frontal approach. It involves a teacher monologue in front of the blackboard, the passive role of students and pupils, memorizing data, lack of dialogue, cooperation and finding connections. Research shows that the effect of such teaching is very short-lived. In a very short period of time, almost nothing remains of the discontinuous facts. The results show popular TV polls in the streets that show that we don't know much about modern history, whether we are old or young. Because such ignorance means above all manipulability, it is a significant social problem where the concept of history teaching does not meet the needs of society freely - because in an informed way - to make decisions. The young youtuber and influencer Karel Kovář alias Kovy, who deals with the processing of social topics through authorial videos distributed on social networks, has his own recent experience with insufficient history teaching. Because he cares about the state of the society in which he lives, he wants to push for a change in the form and content of modern history teaching. He uses hundreds of thousands of his spectators to name the essence of the problem, and sets off for them in the field. During a documentary roadmovie, he visits school students throughout the country and, in the meantime, analyzes the context with historians, didactics of history and other experts. It does not stay with the statement and tries to find a solution how to transform the unsatisfactory system. Therefore, it turns to its direct actors. His objects of interest are teachers, parents, school heads, faculties of education, school inspections and the Minister of Education himself. The film aims to inspire all types of participants during critical journeys, what they can do themselves and not wait for someone else to do. It shows the young generation, who needs to be taken seriously with their needs, feelings and beliefs, as well as teachers who show with their own interest and effort that everyday modern history teaching can be corrected. However responsible the state, none of the actors, from students to ministers, is without a chance to make a difference in what threatens our society. Kovy's roadmovie in the teaching of modern history is a challenge to perceive his own role as active.
